Cyclones are a quite common natural hazard in the Australian environment, but, like many places, they occur more in some places that others. In Australia, cyclones tend to occur to the northern coast, and down the eastern coast through parts of Queensland, The northern area of Western Australia also experiences some cyclones, though not as many. This spatial distribution of cyclones is due to warmer ocean currents being found around the north-western, northern and north-eastern coasts of Australia. This helps cyclones to form. (See formation of cyclones)
Because of this, areas on the northern coast of Australia are always prepared for cyclones, whereas people further south never have to worry about a cyclone occurring, and so are never prepared for them.
